ABC-ARTE presents, at its historic Genoese venue, the exhibition Gastone Biggi. Painting Is a Serious Matter, a solo show dedicated to one of the most radical and original artists of the Italian post-war scene. This is the most comprehensive retrospective ever organized by a gallery on the work of the Roman painter, offering a complete journey through the various phases of his intense artistic exploration.
The exhibition offers an in-depth immersion into the pictorial universe of Gastone Biggi (Rome, 1925 – Tordenaso di Langhirano, 2014), a pivotal figure for understanding the many layers of an art practice that consistently rejected dogma and theoretical simplifications.
The title of the exhibition, Painting Is a Serious Matter, is not a quote from Biggi himself, but rather from Piero Dorazio, who dedicated a fundamental text to his friend in 1967.
After the formative experience of Gruppo Uno in 1962—alongside Frascà, Santoro, Pace, Carrino, and Uncini—Biggi embarked on an independent path, focusing on the essential formal qualities of the artwork. His contribution was instrumental in moving beyond the aesthetics of Art Informel and redefining the language of contemporary painting.
The exhibition brings together a cohesive and representative selection of works from Biggi’s major painting cycles, alongside his prolific theoretical and critical output: from Poetica della percezione (1964), to Bisny. From Byzantium to New York (1975), and the Manifesto of Abstract Realism (2005). His biography, marked by frequent relocations, new studios, and ongoing dialogue with architects and musicians, reflects the portrait of a complete and tireless intellectual.
A rigorous and consistent experimenter, always committed to probing the deeper meaning of artistic practice and perception, Biggi stands out as one of the most significant voices of the European post-war avant-garde.
The exhibition has been made possible thanks to the valuable collaboration with the Gastone Biggi Foundation, established in 2015 to protect and promote the artist’s legacy.
On the occasion of the exhibition, a bilingual publication (ABC-ARTE editions) will be released, featuring a critical essay by the curator and a rich selection of archival and scholarly materials, including contributions by Aldo Clementi, Cesare Vivaldi, Elena Pontiggia, Paolo Fossati, and Piero Dorazio, kindly provided by the Foundation.
