A partire dal 29 gennaio 2026, ABC-ARTE presenta nella sede storica genovese la mostra Jorrit Tornquist. Il colore è di per se stesso spazio, a cura di Flaminio Gualdoni e realizzata in collaborazione con l’Archivio Jorrit Tornquist. L’esposizione rappresenta la prima mostra così ampia e significativa dedicata all’artista in una galleria privata italiana, e inaugura un importante percorso di rilettura critica e storica del suo lavoro, essenziale per comprendere la complessità dell’arte europea dagli anni Sessanta in poi. Jorrit Tornquist (Graz, 26 marzo 1938 – Cisano Bergamasco, 17 maggio 2023) è stato un caso singolare, e per molti versi ancora tutto da approfondire, nel panorama dell’arte del secondo Novecento. Se ne è spesso messo in evidenza l’estremo rigore metodologico, ma più raramente si è colta la profonda implicazione biologica e naturale che lo ha sempre animato: una tensione vitale che lega la sua ricerca al mondo organico e all’esperienza sensibile del colore come materia viva.
La mostra di ABC-ARTE intende rappresentare l’inizio di un profondo e complessivo ripensamento dell’intero opus dell’artista, presentando una selezione di opere cruciali che tracciano un percorso coerente e sorprendentemente attuale. Dalla precoce Colonna infinita (1966), in cui si attua l’intuizione per cui — come scriverà nel 1974 — “Il colore è di per se stesso spazio”, e che apre anche alla sua fondamentale esperienza in ambito architettonico, fino al polittico Petals (2002), in cui la capacità di modulare minimi scarti tonali provoca nello spettatore un’esperienza immersiva e straniante, il percorso espositivo restituisce la profondità della sua visione. Per Tornquist, il colore è la sostanza problematica e vitale del nostro vedere, e non un mero strumento espressivo: esso è la materia stessa della visione. La sua non è mai un’indagine retorica sulla percezione, ma un continuo esercizio di consapevolezza, un invito a riconnettere il nostro sguardo con la realtà fenomenica che ci circonda. In questa prospettiva si collocano anche le celebri Cassette didattiche, presentate alla 42ª Biennale di Venezia del 1986, qui nuovamente proposte. Attraverso l’apparato tipico della didattica, Tornquist induceva lo spettatore a diventare consapevole di vivere un’esperienza estetica che va ben oltre la semplice constatazione visiva, trasformandola in conoscenza viva. Una pubblicazione bilingue, ABC-ARTE edizioni, accompagnerà la mostra, con testi di Flaminio Gualdoni e un ricco apparato documentale curato dall’Archivio Jorrit Tornquist, volto ad approfondire la riflessione dell’artista sul colore come spazio e materia del vedere.

Starting from January 29th 2026, ABC-ARTE presents at its Genoa venue the exhibition Jorrit Tornquist. Colour Is in Itself Space, curated by Flaminio Gualdoni and organized in collaboration with the Jorrit Tornquist Archive. The exhibition represents the first such extensive and significant show dedicated to the artist in a private Italian gallery, and it inaugurates an important process of critical and historical reinterpretation of his work—essential for understanding the complexity of European art from the 1960s onward. Jorrit Tornquist (Graz, March 26, 1938 – Cisano Bergamasco, May 17, 2023) was a singular figure—one still to be fully explored—within the landscape of late 20th-century art. His work has often been noted for its extreme methodological rigor, yet the profound biological and natural dimension that always animated it has been less frequently recognized: a vital tension that links his research to the organic world and to the sensory experience of color as living matter.
The ABC-ARTE exhibition is intended as the beginning of a deep and comprehensive reconsideration of the artist’s entire oeuvre, presenting a selection of crucial works that trace a coherent and strikingly contemporary path.From the early Colonna infinita (1966)—where he realized the intuition that, as he would write in 1974, “Colour is in itself space,” and which also opens onto his fundamental experience in the architectural field—to the polyptych Petals (2002), in which his ability to modulate the slightest tonal variations provokes in the viewer an immersive and disorienting experience, the exhibition conveys the full depth of his vision.For Tornquist, color is the problematic and vital substance of our seeing, not a mere expressive tool: it is the very matter of vision itself. His inquiry is never a rhetorical investigation of perception, but a continuous exercise in awareness—an invitation to reconnect our gaze with the phenomenal reality that surrounds us.In this same perspective are placed the celebrated Didactic Boxes, first presented at the 42nd Venice Biennale in 1986 and now displayed again. Through the typical tools of didactic practice, Tornquist encouraged viewers to become aware of experiencing an aesthetic process that goes far beyond simple visual observation, transforming it into living knowledge. A bilingual publication, ABC-ARTE Edizioni, will accompany the exhibition, featuring texts by Flaminio Gualdoni and a rich documentary section curated by the Jorrit Tornquist Archive, aimed at deepening the artist’s reflections on color as both space and the material of vision.
