In his native city, he studied biology and architecture and took his first steps in the art world.
In 1964, he moved to Italy, and in 1992, he obtained Italian citizenship while retaining his Austrian nationality.
Since 1959, his research has been a passionate study of color—both in its relationship with light and the surface of the painting, and in its potential to act upon the environment, particularly within an architectural context.
His approach to painting was always scientific: a investigation that, especially in his later works, aimed at the materialization of the object through light, addressing not only the perception of color and its relationship with light, but also its functions in nature and its psychological effects on human beings.
This consequent research on color perception and use led Jorrit Tornquist to significant applications in the fields of architecture and design.
From 1965 onward, his work was exhibited in major galleries and public spaces both in Italy and abroad, earning numerous awards and recognitions.
