On the occasion of the artist Giorgio Griffa's 90th birthday, the GAM in Turin presents an exhibition dedicated to his long career. The exhibition includes a selection of significant works that retrace the key stages of his artistic journey. The exhibition offers the public the opportunity to appreciate Griffa's stylistic and thematic evolution, highlighting his ongoing research and innovation in the field of contemporary art. To mark the inauguration of the GAM's new exhibition season, the FOURTH RESONANCE, several rooms of the permanent collections are also being renovated. Among these, one room is dedicated to the work of Giorgio Griffa, a central figure in contemporary pictorial research. The initiative is part of a broader program promoted by the Giorgio Griffa Foundation, in collaboration with leading national and international institutions, to celebrate the artist's work on the occasion of his 90th birthday. With a particular focus on the city of Turin and its surrounding area, in 2026 the Castello di Rivoli Museum of Contemporary Art and the GAM will both dedicate a room to the master as part of the reorganization of their respective permanent collections, recognizing the importance of the core works preserved. The room presents five works, including Thumbprint (1969), Two Sponges (1969), and Horizontal Lines (1973) from the GAM collections, alongside the large canvas Yellow Field, Blue Field (1986), on loan from a private collection. The works document key moments in Griffa's research from the late 1960s, when the artist embarked on a radical reflection on the language of painting. His work is distinguished by a practice that entrusts the pictorial gesture with a processual and open dimension: signs, lines, and fields of color are arranged on the raw canvas according to essential rhythms, leaving the temporality of the execution visible and embracing the unfinished as a structural principle. In dialogue with the analytical and conceptual research of the late twentieth century, his painting is an investigation into the making of the image, in which the surface becomes a space for the relationship between rule and variation, order and possibility. The dedication of a room to Giorgio Griffa within the GAM's permanent collections thus aims to restore the continuity and relevance of a research that, beginning in Turin, has contributed significantly to the renewal of contemporary painting.
