Tempo Continuo: Gastone Biggi

curated by Flaminio Gualdoni

From June 4 to September 12, 2026, ABC-ARTE presents Tempo Continuo, Gastone Biggi’s first solo exhibition at the gallery’s Milan venue, ABC-ARTE ONE OF, curated by Flaminio Gualdoni. The project continues the exhibition Gastone Biggi. La pittura si fa sul serio, presented at the gallery’s historic Genoa venue in 2025, and is developed in close collaboration with the Fondazione Gastone Biggi.

The exhibition brings together previously unseen works from six fundamental cycles in the artist’s practice: the Continui, the Variabili, the Eventi – Guerra e Pace, the New York series, the Puntocromie, and the Fleurs. Rather than replicating the Genoa retrospective, Tempo Continuo proposes an autonomous and complementary perspective, bringing together works from different periods to reveal the underlying coherence of Biggi’s constantly evolving practice.

One of the most rigorous and distinctive figures in Italian art of the second half of the twentieth century, Biggi developed a pictorial language grounded in the relationship between colour, light, rhythm, and perception. From the rigorous abstraction of the Continui to the return of colour in the Variabili, from the urban dimension of the New York works to the political tension of the Eventi, his practice continually questions the very nature of the image.

The Puntocromie and Fleurs ultimately lead towards an increasing synthesis, in which the point, colour, and surface become elements of an ever more essential perceptual system. Tempo Continuo thus presents Biggi’s painting as an uninterrupted process: a practice spanning decades, languages, and transformations while preserving an unwavering need to explore time through painting.
