L'idea del colore: Jorrit Tornquist

curated by Flaminio Gualdoni

From 16 September to 31 October 2026, ABC-ARTE presents The Idea of Colour at its Milan venue, ABC-ARTE ONE OF, a solo exhibition dedicated to Jorrit Tornquist, curated by Flaminio Gualdoni and developed in collaboration with the Jorrit Tornquist Archive.

The exhibition brings together works from the 1960s to the artist’s later production, highlighting the continuity of more than sixty years of research into colour as a physical, perceptual and spatial phenomenon. At the centre of the exhibition, XY diagonale, 2013, developed from a 1975 project, moves colour beyond the pictorial surface, transforming it into space and directly involving the viewer.

A key figure in the dialogue between art, architecture and colour theory, Tornquist developed a practice in which colour is not an attribute of form, but a medium capable of altering perception and the relationship between observer and environment. The Idea of Colour forms the second chapter of the gallery’s project dedicated to the artist, following the Genoa exhibition Colour is Space in Itself.

The two exhibitions will culminate in a monographic publication produced by ABC-ARTE in collaboration with the Jorrit Tornquist Archive.
